Pastoralists can get a bad name. These semi-nomadic communities are sometimes portrayed as living an outmoded way of life, feuding and degrading the environment with their herd before moving to a new area. The reality is different. The European Commission supports pastoralism as one of the most efficient and ecologically friendly ways to draw value from arid and semi-arid land.

Wherever you are in the world, beekeeping is a guaranteed source of income. The international market varies but in developing countries honey production remains a vital means of subsistence. It supports the environment too, but plummeting bee numbers now jeopardise food chains in developing and developed countries alike, and experts are scrambling to coordinate a response.

Insects are rich in protein and ecologically sustainable to produce, so why are we reluctant to put them in our mouths? According to Marian Peters, chairperson of the Dutch Insect Breeders Association, the answer is partly cultural.

During the European Development Days 2013, there was a strong focus on youth, as the event welcomed for the first time 12 youth ambassadors from around the world, three of whom were 18 or under. Each ambassador was selected to attend a high-level auditorium session where they were encouraged to join the debate by asking questions and sharing their thoughts. To launch Youth Week, two ambassadors, Esther Eshiet and Restanti Waruwu, share their views with on health and nutrition, and how these should be addressed in the post-2015 agenda.

Using slogans such as ‘Eat Food From Family Farms’, and ‘Healthy People, Animals and Environment’, Veterinaires Sans Frontieres Europa (VSFE) manage a number of projects that support small-scale livestock farmers as they adapt to climate change in vulnerable locations. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg: these projects feed into the EuropeAid Development, Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR) programme, which informs EU citizens how their participation and choices can influence a more sustainable future.

As the crucial role of bees as pollinators of the world’s food supply is increasingly becoming common knowledge, reports about the serious decline of honeybee populations in Europe and the USA have alarmed governments, the private sector and the general public. A similar decline in Africa and Asia has the potential to further threaten the world’s biodiversity, in addition to compromising the food security and livelihoods of millions of rural resource-poor farmers, as well as having negative impacts on the agricultural income of commercial farmers.

The Irish Presidency of the European Union is well underway, with an ambitious development programme and a notable focus on hunger, nutrition and resilience. Gay Mitchell MEP, and Ireland’s Minister for Trade and Development, Joe Costello, gathered development stakeholders together last month to celebrate a remarkable agricultural coalition combating hunger in Sub-Saharan Africa – an Ethiopia-based food security project, centered on the potato.
