It is not only a moral imperative to support democracy, but it also proves effective towards human, social and economic development, and helps the pursuit of peace and stability. Democracy support ought to be comprehensive, long-term and adjusted to local realities. Electoral assistance, to promote genuine pluralist political participation, is an important entry point, but is to be accompanied and complemented with strengthening parliaments and political parties and the promotion of independent and professional media.
