Spanish EU presidency: Seminario Cultura y Desarollo

The current Spanish EU presidency is preparing, together with the European Commission, an important event on culture and development.

Here ist a description from the website:

http://www.culturaydesarrollo2010.es/

"After more than 50 years of cooperation policies, we can today affirm that the process of development of a community is closely intertwined with its culture. The success of any development policy depends on recognizing and considering the principles of cultural diversity.

The mainstreaming of the cultural dimension in development policies

As DG Stefano Manservisi says in his article (and as he affirmed during a debate with his colleague Odile Quentin, DG for Culture, in the European Cultural Forum in September 2009) in recent years, the European Union has been taking steps towards a redefinition of the relationship between culture and development.

Is there a new EU approach to culture and development?

This is the question raised by a recent article that Stefano Manservisi, Director General for Development of the European Commission, published in "Africa e Mediterraneo", an interdisciplinary quarterly on economic, historical and cultural issues in the African context. It is a strong plea for "culture to finally catch up and claim its rightful place as a priority in the development agenda".
